Manon Barbeau and Wapikoni Mobile: cultural ambassadors for Canada during the Governor General's official visit to China

// Wapikoni

Manon Barbeau, Wapikoni Mobile's executive director, joined His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, for an official visit to the People’s Republic of China, with stops in Chongqing, Guiyang, and Beijing, from July 10 to 14, 2017. The goal of this visit was to strengthen the relationships between Canada and China, but also to explore further collaboration in science, technology, innovation, agri-food products, education and tourism.

While in China, Manon Barbeau had the chance to speak with Mr. Lû Bin, a talented filmmaker working with China's cultural minorities the same way the Wapikoni does in Canada. She also participated in a panel discussion with Li Li, founder and executive director of the Guizhou Indigenous Cultures Development Institute, Liu Zhaofeng, head architect of the Huizhou Architecture Research Institute, and Mr. Lû Bin. The mission of the panel of experts was to celebrate and protect the heritage of cultural minorities.

In Beijing, Manon Barbeau visited the National Institute of Minorities, Cultures and Development, where she met with several stakeholders and discussed possible collaborations. That day, the Canadian delegation met President Xi Jinping and several Chinese officials and diplomats to discuss their achievements, concerns and future collaborations.

This official visit was to be His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston's last as he will soon be relieved by Julie Payette.
