Charlie Penosway is an Anishinaabe musician born in Kitcisakik on April 9, 1955. He lives both in the Indigenous and the tcikoji (white) way. Charlie started playing guitar when he was seven and met an anthropologist who was visiting a traditional Anishinaabe gathering place called the Great Lake. He is nostalgic of the past when children ran freely in the woods between the tall pines that are no longer standing. His first music video made in collaboration with Wapikoni speaks of the first time he was taken to a residential school near Amos that stole his and his peers’ identity and culture.
